ASPT Membership Payments

Become part of a vibrant community of students, researchers, and other professional botanists who collectively carry out the vital mission of documenting and understanding Earth’s plant diversity!

Everyone interested in plant systematics in the broadest sense, including modern and traditional methods across all plant groups, is encouraged to join the American Society of Plant Taxonomists.

We have a range of membership types, including discounted rates for students, postdoctoral fellows, and developing country members. Benefits for all members include:

  • Online subscription to Systematic Botany, the Society’s journal, which since 1976 has been a critical international outlet for the publication of influential research in plant systematics. Current members may purchase print issues on-demand by contacting the ASPT Business Office
  • Waived basic publication charges for manuscripts accepted by Systematic Botany. In addition, to foster reproducibility and data availability in science, the authors of accepted manuscripts for Systematic Botany or Systematic Botany Monographs have their Dryad Data Publishing Charges covered in full by the Society.
  • Participation in the management and future direction of the Society through membership across our 14 Council committees, which range from Finance to Publications, to Policy, to Systematics Collections. Student members serve on ASPT committees, providing opportunities for visibility, networking with senior colleagues, and developing management skills
  • Participation at discounted rates at the annual Botany Conference where a broad community interested in Botany devotes several days to oral presentations, poster sessions, and workshops, as well as field trips, informal discussions and social events.
  • Research and travel grants for our student members. Twenty research grants were awarded in 2023.
  • Support for botanical research, conservation, and education through initiatives from several of our committees. These include Public Relations, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Environment and Public Policy, as well through our several grant funds, including several awards for student research, a biennial award for best paper published in Systematic Botany, an annual award for best student paper presented at the Botany Conference, and a Herbarium Emergency Fund.

Your annual ASPT membership begins on January 1 and ends on December 31.

Donation to ASPT General Fund

(to be used where needed most as determined by the ASPT Treasurer)

General Graduate Student Research Grant Fund

Charitable Contributions to ASPT: Donor Restricted Funds

Contributions can be made to any of the restricted funds in two ways. If you designate your contribution to the core fund, your donation will be added to the total invested; in future years, it can incrementally increase the payout and eventually lead to either larger or more grant awards from the specified fund. If you designate your contribution to supplement earnings, the donation will have an immediate impact resulting in an increase of the amount available for grant awards from the specified named fund. If you would like to discuss making a large contribution, please feel free to contact the current ASPT President, Eric Roalson, president@aspt.net, to discuss your generous gift.

SHIRLEY AND ALAN GRAHAM GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH GRANT FUND. This fund was generously endowed by the Grahams in 2002 and represents the first dedicated ASPT student research grant fund.

Your contributions to any of the ASPT funds listed below will have an immediate impact resulting in an increase in the amount available for the specified purpose of the named fund.

Asa Gray Award Fund

The Asa Gray Award was established to recognize outstanding scientists for their contributions to plant systematic research. Your donation will help fund the costs associated with presenting this award.
George R. Cooley Award Fund

Established in 1956, the George R. Cooley Award may be bestowed annually by the Society upon a botanist in the early stages of his/her career who is judged to have presented the best paper in plant systematics at the Annual Meeting. Members of ASPT who are graduate students or in their first year post conferral of the Ph.D. are eligible. Contributions to the George R. Cooley Award Fund are used to help pay for the honorarium given to the awardee and other award expenses.
Grady L. Webster and Barbara D. Webster Plant Systematics Publication Award Fund

This award fund was created in 2006 by Drs. Barbara D. Webster and Susan V. Webster to honor the work of their husband and father. The Grady L. Webster Award alternates between BSA (odd-numbered years) and ASPT (even-numbered years). In 2024, ASPT will present the next Grady L. Webster Plant Systematics Publication Award, recognizing the best published paper in Systematic Botany or Systematic Botany Monographs during 2022 and 2023. Your donation to this fund will be used to support this biennial award.
ASPT Herbarium Emergency Fund
